Losberger builds a closed test area road tunnel for autonomous vehicles

Losberger China recently completed construction of an open-circuit road tunnel in a closed test area adjacent to the Jiading District Shanghai International F1 Circuit. The project was commissioned by Shanghai International Automobile City Development Co. Limited.  


This road tunnel forms part of China’s first state-level intelligent network linking automotive (Shanghai) pilot demonstration area, and will simulate tunnel traffic scenes, provide transport performance testing and to validate the electronic interaction between the road tunnel and driverless cars. 

It is designed to be fully compliant with the prevailing national standards and is equipped with traffic signal lights, indicator lights and emergency lighting.  There are object markings (black and yellow diagonal warning signs) which adds to realistic tunnel traffic scenes for autonomous vehicles.

Environmental stewardship is a core value of Losberger. To reduce impact on the environment, an aluminum framework was used. Insulating polyurethane sandwich panels were installed for the side walls as these are visual appealing, flexible, fire resistant and effective in shielding GPS signals emitted by autonomous vehicles.  

Compared with other building structures, the road tunnel constructed by Losberger only occupies a very small area of road. The entire construction on the prefabricated foundation with a modular design was completed without damaging the road surface. Only two weeks was required to fully complete the project which has a height of 5.1 meters, length of 50 meters and 15 meters width resulting in a considerable saving of construction costs. The use of the tailored modular design was advantageous to meet the tight deadline. 

The project leader of Shanghai International Automobile City Development Co. Limited said: “Losberger’s expertise and its highly-efficient and rapid construction have guaranteed the smooth launch of our entire pilot demonstration area.  This project and the research data will contribute to drafting national laws, regulations and uniform electronic communication standards for domestic autonomous vehicles suitable to China’s road conditions”.
