Losberger trade hall for alternative drive technologies

23/09/16

Losberger erected the imposing temporary A5 trade fair hall, comprising two Losberger Palas units.

In September, more than 2,200 exhibitors and around 50,000 trade visitors travelled to Hamburg to the 27th SMM (Shipbuilding, Machinery & Marine Technology). The SMM is the world's leading trade fair for the maritime economy and ship-building industry.

This year, one main feature of the trade fair was the theme of “Green Propulsion”. Specifically for this purpose, the organisers had envisaged a new, temporary trade fair hall with an additional 3,500 m2 display area on which innovative drive technologies were grouped together for presentation. This is where shipyards and suppliers were given an ideal platform on which to display their alternative and environmentally-friendly drive technologies such as systems for liquefied natural gas, methanol, hybrids and two-substance drives, and also fuel cells and wind power. The new hall was booked out weeks before the trade fair started.

Losberger erected the imposing temporary A5 trade fair hall, comprising two Losberger Palas units on an open space of the Hamburg trade fair, and directly next to the existing Halle A3. In order to allow the incorporation of smaller buildings on the site, and thanks to the two-aisle design, it was easy to shorten a Palas unit so that it fitted exactly. The result seen was a 50 metre wide and 85 metre long building which was available for the organisers to use for a functional and creative space concept. With its 8 metre room height and its technical features, the large-volume Losberger Palas ensured the required trade fair hall standard of quality. Numerous major machinery manufacturers were able to present their new and innovative products and their exhibited objects in the temporary trade fair hall which, thanks to a suspended load on the roof of up to 1,000 kg per truss, also allowed the suspension of heavy and large-sized objects. The surrounding fascia and the frontal facade system functioned as both an architectural element and a communication platform. The organisers made use of large banners in order to create an impressive and promotionally effective facade. Because of the choice of site, Halle A5 also functioned as the official western entry to the trade fair. In this way, the entrance area was equipped with high-quality glass and door elements.

The SMM takes place in Hamburg every two years, and was originally the result of a “Ships' engineers day” held by the Flensburg ships' engineers as an annual event and which was linked to a small exhibition. At this leading trade fair, international exhibitors – two-thirds of them are based outside Germany – present their latest technologies and services: high-power and environmentally compatible ship's engines, navigation technology with maximum precision, innovations for shore-side electricity provision, or also intelligent water purification.

The next SMM will take place from September 4 to 7, 2018.
