This world-record-breaking project demonstrates how we can deliver one-of-a-kind multi-purpose event venues to support ambitious business and tourism initiatives, such as Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah Seasons events programme.
A groundbreaking event space delivered turnkey
We were responsible for managing the turnkey delivery of Jeddah Superdome, including the design and build of the structure, along with a project management and consulting role. In addition to manufacturing and constructing the dome’s impressive frame, we also installed the exterior PVC, walls and doors, ready for the interior fit-out.
Our client Sela asked us for a semi-permanent, high-quality structure that could host some of the Kingdom’s most prestigious and stand-out events, including concerts, shows, sporting events, brand activations and exhibitions. We gave them an event space designed to grab and hold attention on a scale that has never been seen before.
Imagination without limitations
With no current surrounding infrastructure, we took a blank canvas and created a diameter of 210 metres, offering a covered area of 34,636 square metres and a surface area of 39,753 square metres. That’s big. Don’t just take our word for it: Jeddah Superdome holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest geodesic dome.
Adaptability was a key requirement for Sela, so we delivered a structure that is not only built to stand the test of time but can also be repurposed quickly and efficiently after events, so it is ready for the next.
Flexibility and scale didn’t come at the expense of safety. Overseeing every step of the manufacture and installation of the dome’s frame, we successfully prioritised the health, safety and welfare of its team and subcontractor labour onsite. Before construction commenced, every person received comprehensive training, ensuring Losberger De Boer’s stringent health, safety and quality standards were adhered to throughout the build.
It took our 218-strong team over 200,000 hours to build the frame that forms the foundation of this record-breaking and totally unique event venue. Despite the challenges resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, movement restrictions and supply chain disruptions, we delivered the frame three days ahead of schedule by utilising our trusted network of suppliers and in-house experts. Tight deadlines were taken in our stride (we love a challenge) and Jeddah Superdome was officially inaugurated in June 2021, right on time.
