Published on

The Ocean Race is one of the most well-known and toughest professional sporting events in the world, with teams sailing for well over a 100 days in total. Losberger De Boer is proud to have been involved in many editions of this world-spanning and world-class event, including the most recent edition.

The 2023 edition took the teams from Alicante (Esp) to Cabo Verde, Cape Town (SAf), Itajaí (Bra), Newport (US), Aarhus (Den), Kiel (Ger), The Hague (NL) and Genova (Ita).

For the 7th leg, which started on June 15th in The Hague, Losberger De Boer delivered four pavilions in the harbor of The Hague, the administrative and royal capital of the Netherlands. With teams arriving around June 11th and in-port races taking place in the days leading up to the start of the 7th leg, the harbor was buzzing with activity and visitors.

One Blue Voice
With sustainability being a major theme throughout the Ocean Race 2022-23, we built a pavilion dedicated to this important topic, housing the Ocean Race’s ‘One Blue Voice’ campaign. We used two Alu Hall structures to create two pavilions connected by a terrace area. One of the pavilions was delivered fully blacked-out to provide the best possible setting for the displayed video.

We also constructed a brand store for the clothing brand Helly Hansen, as well as the Genova pavilion, which functioned as a conference room. Additionally, we created the Race Boat experience, which housed an actual boat, offering visitors a glimpse of what it’s like to sail the seas.

Challenges
Building in a busy harbor always comes with several challenges. The main one here was the fact that there were substantial height differences throughout the area. To build the merchandising store for Helly Hansen, for instance, our installation crew had to accommodate a height difference of over 70 cm from one side of the structure to the other. The accessibility for the visitors was key in this process, therefore we installed dedicated ramps and staircases.

Building the Race Boat Experience was a challenge in itself. To allow the massive boat to enter the structure, we temporarily removed the upright columns at the front of the building. After the boat was installed, we laid the floor around it.

Our client, Revolve Concept Management, was pleased with our performance, as well as the overall look and feel of the pavilions.
